Singer-Songwriter

Karen and Moka

"Goldberg's voice, simply put, is a treasure, an instrument that does anything asked of it with seeming ease..." OUT MAGAZINE

Her "smooth soprano slides through tracks with assuring ease..." The Washington Post

"A superb writer, composer, instrumentalist, sound engineer who avoids preaching and instead makes her points with wit, sympathy, and humor... Sultry voice and emotive lyrics of a Joni Mitchell with the charismatic sass of a Rickie Lee Jones." The Baltimore Sun

"Fantastic vocals, arrangements, thoughtful and witty text...perfectly recorded and mixed."  Concerto Magazine

"Treading Water" is a unique blend of contemporary folk with a splash of subtle jazz shadings, featuring Karen Goldberg on acoustic guitar and vocal, Genesis drummer Chester Thompson, and some of Nashville's top studio musicians.  Produced by smooth-jazz innovators Michael Moryc and Denny Jiosa, this stunning recording of 11 graceful and thought-provoking tunes by the singer-songwriter, is now available on CD.

About Karen Goldberg

wpe85125.gif (72434 bytes)A Baltimore native, Karen Goldberg, was in college, studying to be a gym teacher, when one night on a dare, she got up on a downtown nightclub stage during the band's break and sang a tune. The owner hired her on the spot, an event that kind of changed her life. Teaching was temporarily put on hold to give music a try. Now, with six nationally distributed releases on CORBETT RECORDS, six international tours (Austria, Australia, Wales, England, Denmark, Norway), hundreds of US college and concert performances, including appearances with 10,000 MANIACS, the B52'S, RANDY NEWMAN, LEO KOTTKE, MICHAEL HEDGES, DAVID WILCOX, RICHIE HAVENS, PAUL RISER, CARROT TOP, THE NIELDS, GRACE SLICK, LIVINGSTON TAYLOR , MAURA O'CONNEL, TOM CHAPIN, SUSAN WERNER, CHERYL WHEELER, THE KINGSTON TRIO, AL DIMEOLA, TOM PAXTON, TOM RUSH, DON MCLEAN, DAVE MASON, HOLLY NEAR, MARTI JONES AND DON DIXON, MOSE ALLISON, FIREFALL, THE DREGS, and more, the "try" has turned into a seriously successful career.

It's not about the typical stuff . She writes about being female ("PMS"), about animal rights ("What if a Cow Ate You"), about injustice ("Benny and James"), about relationships ("Glass-Half Filled Man w/ a glass 1/2 empty wife" "House of Marriage"), about Key West ("90 Miles from Cuba"), about bad toupees ("Why Bother"), "about angst ("Falling on Deaf Ears",) aging gracefully ("I Went to College", "Treading Water,") and traveling the world, from the unique perspective of an American female solo act - with a large golden retriever. ("Sneakin," "Windows of Amsterdam," "Germany.")

"I formed my own label in the early 80's as a result of hearing one too many times from labels, that my sound was not commercial enough. (I was into a jazzy-folky Joni Mitchell-Michael Franks-Rickie Lee Jones-Kenny Rankin kind of sound which you heard virtually nowhere on the radio.) It was the best thing I ever did for myself and my career. This way, I can produce and distribute music with integrity at my own pace, regardless of trends in the 'biz.' Also, I'm the boss." - Karen Goldberg
